About The Facility
Camp Wawenock offers campers the opportunity to sign up for riding classes either every other program day or 5 times per week. Riding staff teach the same camper groups all summer - allowing consistency and safety in horse/rider pairings and group lesson planning that is customized for the individual skills of campers in each class. Lessons occur in the large outdoor ring and the focus is on building balanced, confident riders with a good seat and consistent aides. The program is English-style, Walk, Trot, Canter classes with flexible inclusion of horse knowledge, ground work, games and dressage or other skills. We do not jump.
Job Description
The Head of Riding oversees all aspects of the Riding Program and leads the Riding Staff team - who collectively care for 10 horses and provide instruction, caring interaction, and equine education for the campers who have signed up for Riding.
The Riding Head leads and supports the Riding Staff in the planning and implementation of the instructional program while also supporting and supervising the Barn Manager. The Barn Manager is responsible (with some scheduled assistance from others) for general horse care and feeding, stall and paddock mucking, rotating horses from paddocks and stalls, monitoring and ordering feed and other supplies.
The Head of Riding and Barn Manager usually do not live with campers and do not teach in other activity areas so they are typically the ones who are primarily responsible for monitoring horse health, swapping out and tacking up horses between classes, assigning tasks to riding staff and communicating with Lead Instructors and Riding Staff about their classes and any important information regarding the horses behavior, how they are riding that day, etc.
The Riding Head attends meetings with other Activity Heads during pre-season and ongoing throughout the summer and then plans and facilitates pre-season and ongoing weekly Riding Staff meetings/training sessions.
The Head of Riding communicates directly with Camp’s Directors and Assistant Director about how the program is running, as well as sharing any specific concerns they may have about campers, staff, horses, etc.
Wawenock is a close-knit, welcoming community where respect for each person is paramount and everyone is encouraged to be an active member of the larger Camp community, participating in all-camp events and evening programs, etc. All resident staff members work 6 days per week. The Riding Program typically operates on the five regular program days each week, giving the horses (and instructional staff) a break!
